Argument Ideas

I believe we have learned quite a bit on arguementive papers. It be nice to know how we can make it stronger. Also, we are not supposed to use fallacies, but that is hard to do. So what should we substitute in instead of a fallacy. Also, in an argumentive paper, some people may feel very stongly about a topic and go all out and possibly go too far. What is too far in an argumentive paper.

Argument Audience

My audience for being against abortion would be any girl who is pregnant and not wanting to keep her baby. Michelle is a eighteen year old girl who is in her first year of college. She had one bad night and made one mistake that drastically changed her life. She wanted to continue college and so she knows that she can't keep the baby. She is really looking into abortion. She is not catholic and it is not against her religion. She likes to have fun, stay out late, and be irresponsible. There is no way she can handle having a baby. She tends to get in trouble. She has a couple minors already in her life. She is not very successful in school. For her, the reason for college is to meet new people and have fun. Hopefully after she reads my paper, she will think twice about how bad abortion really is. Also, having the baby could help her change her life from being bad to good.

Argument

My last argument was with my ex boyfriend. He broke it off with me because I was moving down to Mankato for college. We argued for weeks because I didn't believe that's why he ended our relationship. My argument is why would he break it off only because I'm going to college. He claims he wouldn't see me enough. That is not true though. I go back home almost every other weekend. We could see each other during the time I am at home. Plus, he is twenty one, has a full time job, and has a car. The drive from his house is only an hour and a half. If I actually meant anything to him he would have at least tried to make it work. He could have got off work on Friday, drive down and stay all weekend long. He wouldn't have to pay for anything besides the gas to get down here. I would provide him with the food and housing. I just don't agree with him on why he broke up with me. I think the whole college excuse was a big cover-up so it didn't make him look like the bad guy. Obviously I didn't mean enough to him, otherwise it would have worked out.

Appeal to Popularity

The fallacy that I remember the most is the appeal to popularity. This is used all day, everyday by everyone. Now a days, it's all about being the popular one, and doing whatever you have to do to be popular. I would say that it is one of the most often used fallacy. If an action you take increases your popularity, there is a great chance that you will do the action. In high school, this is very true. Once you get to college, it mellows down a little bit but it's still there. Life is all one big competition of popularity.

Personal Essay Reflection

The thing I liked most about writing a personal essay is that you were the source for the paper. This was the only time when I didn't have to do any reasearch. It is much easier to write because it is all about you and is was easy to give details. It is also nice because then when people read your paper, they know something about you. Usually it is something that was important in your life. Its a good way for people to get to know you.

The thing I didn't like about writing a personal essay was that I could have kept writing and writing. The requirements were three to four pages. If I was allowed to, I could have easily spread that story out into five or six pages. That way I could have provided even more detail. I wrote about a bad experience so it was kind of hard to write it down on paper and remember everything that happened to me. That was my choice though. I could have done a good memory but didn't.
